The town was merely a European settlement. It began in 1863 when the first settlers arrived. The town reserve was established in 1865 on the southern bank near the junction of the two rivers. It has a sugar plantation and a sugar mill operated from 1866 to the 1890s. Back then, the Ageston sugar plantation location in Alberton was considered one of the most delicate plants in the district.
