History of Ballan During the Victorian Gold Rush, gold was found on the land of Ballan, which led to many prospectors visiting the area in 1851. Soon after, the Ballan Hotel was built, and the town became an important assembly point for coaches headed to the Ballarat Goldfields nearby. The town’s post office opened in September of 1853. The Ballan Primary School was established on 8 January 1855.
