History of Barwon Heads The location of present-day Barwon Heads was the territory of the Wathaurong people. The rivers and upstream lakes in the area are where the Aboriginal people would go hunting or fishing. It was June 1835 when settlers arrived in the area and established a camp at Indented Head. By the 1870s, the township was formed, and its first post office opened in 1889. The early years of this seaside town thrived mostly on fishing until it developed into a famous holiday resort town, which it has come to be known as today.
