History of Bellbowrie Bellbowrie is an Aboriginal word, and it is believed that it came from the Hunter River area in New South Wales. The word means ‘flowering gum’, and the suburb was named on November 4, 1972, and made official on August 11, 1975. The initial subdivisions started in the early 1970s, but everything was slowed after the 1974 Brisbane flood. It badly affected much of the eastern and lower-lying areas of the suburb. In the 1980s, the Wivenhoe Dam was constructed to manage floods in the area, and it was then when development paced a bit. In 1990, the boundaries were extended to include land previously in Anstead. In 2001, new housing estates started to develop in the area on land that was used for pineapple farming.
