Captain Thomas Rowley established a farm in 1799, naming it Burwood after a similar place in Surrey, England. In 1814, the first residential settlement came up. Soon it turned to be a staging post for people moving westward to the Paramatta area. With the railway coming to the area in 1855, it expanded, and Burwood was declared a municipality in 1874. A planned residential area developed around the Appian Way in the early 1900s.
