History of Strathfield The Wangal clan of Aboriginals historically inhabited the Strathfield area. In 1793, the first batch of English settlers received land grants. It was then known as "Liberty Plains" for many land grants to free settlers. A railway station was opened in 1855. By 1885, the locality had become large enough to have its own local government. On June 2 that year, it was formally registered as Strathfield Council.
Strathfield suburb transformed with large-scale residential and commercial development in the early 20th century. It soon became a prestigious suburban hub connected directly with Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra. The commercial centre developed around the railway station.
