History of Enfield The suburb's name was derived after Enfield Town, a suburb in London. The Wangal people, a clan of the Eora tribe that occupied most of Sydney, owned the Enfield area before the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788. Smallpox, which arrived with the British, afflicted the Eora people early. Many of the clans decreased to the point where they could no longer feed themselves, and the survivors established new bands to live anywhere they could. Most of the land in the suburb had been granted to British immigrants by thirty years or so.
