History of California Gully In 1852, gold was discovered in California Gully, resulting in a large influx of Cornish miners strengthening a Methodist tradition. They established the first school in California Gully in 1857. This suburb, formed in Eaglehawk Road, is distinguished by the Uniting (former Methodist) church built behind the White Horse Hotel. Both landmarks were built in the early 1870s.
On the Eaglehawk tram line, the California Gully Mines operated by the North Johnson group ( 1861 to 1920) enjoyed a long production period. Bell Topper Hill, a school building, built in 1883, must have been named after the bell topper hats used by the English miners to make a bonfire.
