History of Eaglehawk Eaglehawk is a former gold mining town, and the Neanger people are its former inhabitants. Gold was first discovered in Sandhurst (former name of Bendigo) in 1851, which led to the gold rush in the area. This formed the township in present-day Bendigo as the population grew to 40,000, and the Borough of Eaglehawk was formed. But as the gold was exhausted, the mines were closed, and the population declined with it.
