Overview Calliope is a small town and community in Queensland's Gladstone Region. Calliope is a town in Central Queensland, Australia, situated at the crossroads of the Bruce Highway and the Dawson Highway, about 20 kilometres (12 miles) southwest of Gladstone, the state's largest city. Gladstone Monto Road (State Route 69) links to the Dawson Highway and goes through the area south of it. Calliope has a population of 3,438 people, according to the 2016 census.
Living in Calliope Calliope, named after the Calliope River, is a semi-rural community. Tannum Sands Beach, Boyne River, and Lake Awoonga are all within a 30-minute drive to Calliope. Calliope, a long-time Gladstone suburb, is separated into various districts. Moreover, a new secondary school debuted in January 2020, and Calliope Primary School features a pool. History of Calliope Following a trip from Sydney to Port Curtis aboard the HMS Calliope, the Governor of New South Wales, Charles Augustus FitzRoy, christened the Calliope River on April 18, 1854. Since then, the town and its surrounding area have been home to gold mines, cattle, timber, and, more recently, heavy industry, shipping, and tourism. Following its discovery in 1862, alluvial gold was extracted in the region. The following year, Queensland's first goldfield was declared.
