History of Canterbury The Bediagal clan from the Eora nation originally inhabited the land where Canterbury is located.
The first land grant during the European settlement was given to Reverend Richard Johnson, the colony’s first chaplain. Rev. Johnson named his property Canterbury Vale, after the cathedral city in southeast England.
Developments in the area took place in 1841 after a village was formed here. Land sales were successful, and though the soil in the area was poor, farm cultivation still took place. During its early years, major industries in the suburb included wood cutting, brickmaking, carting, and tanneries.
