Overview The suburb of Ashbury is a suburb and falls in Sydney's Inner West region. The region is in New South Wales state, and the City of Canterbury-Bankstown plays the governing body. History of Ashbury Ashbury was home to Cadigal and Wangal people much before it turned into the Britisher's colony in Sydney. After much persistence and pressure, the British administration began subdividing the surroundings of the Sydney settlement and began granting them to the colonists. The first grant was of 100 acres to Reverend Richard Johnson, the first chaplain of the colony. However, it was in 1919 that the suburb saw a widescale development. A primary school began its operation in 1924 and changed its name to Ashbury Public School, adopting the local identity.
