History of Ashfield The Wangal people inhabited the suburb before the arrival of Europeans. The land was heavily wooded at the time with tall eucalypts, and the people hunted by killing native animals. In 1788, the First Fleet arrived in the area, but it had a devastating effect on the local people. The development progressed with constructing a rough track between the colony’s two settlements at Parramatta and Sydney Cove.
