History of Castle Hill The origin of the name of Castle Hill is Cootharinga, sometimes written as Cooderinga. The discovery of the town of Castle Hill started when Robert Towns, the founder of Townsville, passed away, and they needed a place to put his monument in. Tom Gleeson, a resident of Townsville, proposed that the monument would be best placed "high on the peak of Castle Hill, overlooking the harbour", and the rest gave rise to the town of Castle Hill.
