Overview The suburb of Townsville is a coastal area in Queensland, which is both a residential suburb and a central business district. Located about 1,150 kilometres north of Brisbane, Townsville is the biggest city in Queensland that is not part of the Brisbane-Sunshine Coast-Gold Coast conurbation. With a total land area of two kilometres, Townsville City is home to 21,840 people, based on the national census conducted in 2016.

History of Townsville Townsville sits on native Wulgurukaba Aboriginal land. It was founded in 1864 on an unlucky bay identified by James Cook in 1770. In the Pacific Ocean, Cook named Cape Cleveland and a five-kilometre-long island called 'Magnetic.' Phillip Parker King and Allan Cunningham surveyed Cleveland Bay in 1819. Townsville was named for Robert Towns, a trader and entrepreneur who helped finance pastoral growth along the Ross River.
