History of West End West End is a quiet neighbourhood located two kilometres southwest of downtown Townsville and just south of Castle Hill. The community sinks from the hillsides around Castle Hill to a flat map in the south, where swamps existed until the postwar years. From 1866 until 1902, West End Graveyard served as Townsville's primary burial.
It is located adjacent to the local elementary school (Townsville West) founded in 1887. Most of West End's lasting systems and processes were built during the 1880s, including the Townsville Exhibition (1882), a Mainline denomination in Ingham Avenue (1886), St Mary's Catholic religion (1888) and school (1888-1994), and the West Village Hotel (1885) in Ingham Road at Jane Street. The original church, St Peter's Anglican, was constructed in 1863 and renovated about 1964.
