History of Darling Heights The Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education chose the then largely underdeveloped area that is now Darling Heights as its campus site in the 1960s.
A local State primary school opened in 1980 and boosted residential development in the area. Duplexes, detached houses, and low-rise units began to sprout around the northern tip of the primary school. In the 1990s, development spread westward.
In 1992, the area south of the school remained rural and residential despite the Institute becoming the University of Southern Queensland.
