Overview The coastal suburb of Dee Why is situated 18 kilometres northeast of the Sydney central business district. The suburb serves as the administrative seat of the Northern Beaches Council and is one of the major centres of the Northern Beaches region.

Dee why is neighboured by the suburbs of Cromer, Collaroy, Narraweena, Brookvale and North Curl Curl and the Tasman Sea on its east.

Based on the 2016 census, Dee Why has a population of 21,518.

Living in Dee Why Dee Why is known to have one of the nicest beachfronts in the Northern Beaches. It is home to primarily young families and young professionals.

The suburb’s central commercial district is centred on Pittwater Road, where various businesses and shops are lined down the streets leading to the beach. At the south of the Dee Why beachfront is The Strand -- another major commercial area with cafes and restaurants overlooking the beach.

History of Dee Why The story behind the suburb’s name remains unclear; however, the earliest written reference of Dee Why was in 1815, when James Meehan referred to the location in his field book as “Dy Beach”.

First land grants in the suburb took place in the early 19th century, which was then acquired by James Jenkins and other members of the Jenkins family by the mid-19th century. One of the landowners, Elizabeth Jenkins, gave her land to the Salvation Army following her death in 1990.

In 1911, the suburb only had 62 residents until the land was released by the Salvation Army, which prompted the land sales and development in Dee Why.
