History Collaroy is a suburb in northern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Collaroy is 22 kilometres north-east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Northern Beaches Council. It is part of the Northern Beaches region. Nicknamed "The Roy" by many of the locals. It was originally part of Narrabeen until it was renamed after the S.S. Collaroy ran aground on the beach in 1881. The area became more developed in the mid-twentieth century. On 12 February 1923, Collaroy Beach Post Office opened and on 1 April 1949, Collaroy Plateau Post Office opened. It closed in 1988 and was replaced by Collaroy Plateau West Post Office on 1 November 1967, which was renamed to Collaroy Plateau in 1996. The beach and housing near the beach on Pittwater Road were badly affected by weather in early June 2016, with a strip of houses losing backyards.
