Overview Fairfield is a suburb located in the Great Western Sydney region, 23 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district. The suburb is in the centre of Cumberland Plain and is surrounded by the suburbs of Smithfield, Yennora, Old Guildford, Fairfield Heights, Fairfield East, Canley Heights, Canley Vale, and Carramar.
As of the 2016 census, Fairfield has a population of 18,081.
Living in Fairfield The main commercial and shopping centre in Fairfield is located around Smart and Ware streets. In this area are plenty of restaurants offering various cuisines from Persian, Thai, Lebanese and Chinese. The Neeta City Shopping Centre, Fairfield Forum shopping mall and plenty of local and specialty shops are also situated here.
For transport, Fairfield has its railway station and adjacent to it is a major bus interchange.
There are several public schools in Fairfield, while there are three private schools - two of which are Catholic schools and the other is a Buddhist school.
History of Fairfield The original settlers in the area of Fairfield are the Cabrogal-Gandangara tribe, who lived in the land for over 30,000 years.
It was in the journal of British naval officer and cartographer William Bradley when the first settlement in the Fairfield district was recorded. A soldier from the NSW Corps was the first to receive a grant in the centre of Fairfield. The said property was named Castel Paul. Years later, the property changed owners, and in the 1860s, Thomas Ware Smart brought the estate and built a mansion called “Fairfield House”.
