Living in Golden Point For a minimum of a decade, the main street was the Ballarat township’s focal point. History of Golden Point It is believed to be referred to as ‘Poverty Point,’ although the prospectors James Regan and John Dunlop came across few ounces of gold while passing through this suburb. Instead, it got associated with igniting the Ballarat Goldrush, which led to its name change. The main street was nearly devastated by a disastrous fire, and it later witnessed its steep downfall during the 1860s and 1870s for the township of Ballarat West being established. The 1970s marks the construction of the Sovereign Hill Historic Park for the revitalization of its original settlement.
