Kangaroo Flat got its name from the large groups of Eastern Grey kangaroos found around the campsites of gold miners during the gold rush and the gigantic forest landscapes in Bendigo.

History of Kangaroo Flat Kangaroo Flat was first known as Yankee Boat Flat. The capture of kangaroos around the campsite of gold miners caused the change of the suburbs name to Kangaroo Flat.
Bendigo, along with its satellite towns, including Kangaroo Flat, White Hills, Eaglehawk, and Golden Square, were tent cities. In the 1880s, permanent structures and street layouts were established. The gold rush in the Crusoe Gully in the western portion of Kangaroo in 1853 started the rush of people to the district. The population of Kangaroo Flat decreased when the gold rush ended. The suburb has, however, maintained its identity and cultural heritage.
The Crusoe Reservoir in Kangaroo Flat was built to provide water to the goldfields in Bendigo. Kangaroo Flat was first named Yankee Boat Flat. It was later called Kangaroo Flat because of the kangaroos the miners then encountered in the campsites.
