Overview Kureelpa is a suburb positioned in the western section of the Sunshine Coast region. It is beside the Mapleton National Park to the west and is cornered by Kiamba on the north, Image Flat and Highworth on the east, Perwillowen on the southeast, Dulong on the south, and Mapleton on the southwest. Within the expanse is the Poona Dam, an earth-fill embarkment used to store potable water for the entire region.

Living in Kureelpa Surrounded by the vast Mapleton National Park, Kureelpa is a lovely place to live in, especially for those who prefer a lush and peaceful setting. Public transportation may not be as assessable compared to other suburbs, but it’s still viable with some local bus services catering to the needs of the residents. The Nambour-Mapleton Road serves as the primary pathway in the area, and the nearest railway is located at the Nambour station. Shamley Heath Bushland Conservation Reserve and Arthur Roberts Park are the two recreational sites within the suburb, while the Blackall Range Independent School is the only school around.

History of Kureelpa It is believed that Kureelpa was named after an Aboriginal term, Kuril-ba, which means a site of rats and mice. Early development in the suburb is the Kureelpa Provisional School, which started its operations back in 1914. It was then shut down after fifty-three years of service. In 1915, another school was opened, the Poona State School, which was subsequently sold in 1937 due to a low number of enrollees. By 1959, a notable structure was constructed in the area, the Poona Dam. The Blackall Range Independent School was eventually established in 1975.
