History of Kureelpa It is believed that Kureelpa was named after an Aboriginal term, Kuril-ba, which means a site of rats and mice. Early development in the suburb is the Kureelpa Provisional School, which started its operations back in 1914. It was then shut down after fifty-three years of service. In 1915, another school was opened, the Poona State School, which was subsequently sold in 1937 due to a low number of enrollees. By 1959, a notable structure was constructed in the area, the Poona Dam. The Blackall Range Independent School was eventually established in 1975.
