Overview Leopold is a residential suburb in the eastern part of Geelong, Victoria. It also serves as a gateway to the Bellarine Peninsula. This suburb is located 86 km southwest of Melbourne and 11 km east of Geelong. It is part of the Federal Division of Corangamite. There are 12,814 residents in Leopold as of 2016. It is surrounded by other suburbs such as Moolap, Curlewis, Connewarre, and Wallington.
Living in Leopold Leopold is a great suburb with an affordable housing market. It is also one of the larger communities on the Bellarine Peninsula. There are three schools in Leopold for families who live in the suburb. There are plenty of residential developments in Leopold on either side of the Bellarine Highway. You can also find plenty of small shopping centres. When it comes to recreational opportunities, there are lots of boats in the jetties along Corio Bay. The picturesque beaches are within proximity to the centre of the suburb, particularly those near the bays of Ocean Grove and Queenscliff.
History of Leopold The former name of Leopold was Kensington. In 1892, it was renamed after Prince Leopold – the youngest son of Queen Victoria. In 1858, the town opened its first post office, and it was during this time that it was renamed Kensington Hill and then Leopold Hill in 1884. The last name – Leopold – was established in 1885.
