History of Lethbridge The rural community was initially titled Muddy Water Holes; the term has probably derived from the string of ponds that ran along Bruce's Stream. The community was established and called Lethbridge in 1854. It was located along the horse-drawn cart trails that linked Geelong and Ballarat to connect Geelong's shipping routes with Ballarat's gold coast, which has become the principal route between the two towns and is now Midland Road. Moreover, the railway moved to the area with the building of the Geelong-Ballarat line in 1862, and the municipal train station opened shortly after, although the line is now only used by wheat and fruits services trains.
