History of Churchill The name Churchill honours the former British prime minister Sir Winston Churchill. He died earlier in the year when the suburbs establishment was announced. The suburb was established as a service centre for the Hazelwood power station as a replacement for Yallourn and Morwell townships. It came into existence when the State Electricity Commission of Victoria expanded its coal mining operations and announced the construction. This site was chosen because it was a pleasant location that was relatively from air pollution and also not above rich cornfields. The construction started in 1965, and in the same year, the first two houses were built and occupied by the Arch and Ayers families.
