Overview Menai is a suburb in the south of Sydney, New South Wales. It is part of the LGA of the Sutherland Shire and is 29 kilometres to the south of Sydney's central business district. Bangor, Woronora Heights, Alfords Point, and Barden Ridge are suburbs within less than 3 kilometres from Menai.
Founded in 1973, Menai had a population of 10,304 people (2016 census).
Living in Menai Menai is a relatively new suburb, having been developed only in the 1980s. The suburb has three shopping centres, Menai Metro, Menai Market Place, and Menai Central, consisting of many fine restaurants and retail stores. Four bus routes and three train stations service the suburb.
Sports and recreation in the suburb are provided by the Buckle Reserve Menai, close to the Menai Marketplace and the Menai Indoor Sports centre operated by the local council.
Menai also has a few schools, including Aquinas College, Menai Primary, and Holy Family Primary School. Menai High is, however, not within the Menai suburb, but in Illawong, which is just outside the suburb.
History of Menai Menai got its name from the Menai Bridge, a town along the Menai Strait in Wales.
In 1895 this suburb was called Bangor, the birthplace in Wales of the owner of the land, Owen Jones. The suburb's name was changed to Menai by the office of the Postmaster-General so as not to be confused with Bangor, Tasmania.
