Overview Twenty-seven kilometres south of Sydney’s CBD, Illawong is a rapidly rising suburb in New South Wales. It is positioned on land at the confluence of the Georges River and the Woronora River. Alfords Point, Menai, Bangor, Bonnet Bay and Como suburbs surround Illawong, which had a population of 7,221 at the 2016 census.

History of Illawong Illawong is an Aboriginal name indicating land in the middle of the water. The suburb has Georges and Woronora Rivers on its three sides, leading the natives to call it Illawong. Early inhabitants of the place included the Tharawal and Eora Aboriginals, and it still has many rock carvings and cave paintings belonging to them. In 1789, Captain John Hunter became the first outsider to arrive in Illawong, which saw the rise of several settlements within a decade. Following the construction of Old Illawarra Road in the 1840s, the area grew as a farming area. It was called East Menai until 1961, when Illawong became a separate suburb. The 1970s witnessed the rapid suburbanization of Illawong.
