Overview Lugarno is a suburb in the St. George area of Southern Sydney, New South Wales, in Australia. It is a part of the local government area of the Georges River Council, which is located 23 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district. Lugarno is neighboured by the following suburbs: Padstow Heights, Alfords Point, Illawong, Peakthrust, Peakthrust Heights, and Oatley. As of the 2016 census, the population of Lugarno was 30,582.

The suburb has a small commercial area that consists of daily needs’ shops, an IGA supermarket, a post office, a bar, some eateries, and more. There is only one educational institute in Lugarno, the Lugarno Public School, which opened in 1933, and is still operating.
History of Lugarno The area on which Lugarno is built is said to have been inhabited by the Dharug people or the Coastal Eora people. Both these groups spoke the same language. Lugarno was named by surveyors Major Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell and William Govett after the Lake Lugano of Switzerland. An extra “r” was also added to the suburb’s name. The suburb started developing as a residential area in the 1960s after the area was released for home sites.
