History of Menton
Menton is named after a French-Italian Mediterranean resort town. Many streets bear the names of Italian cities to highlight its pre-eminence as a place of tourist attraction. The Bunurong Aboriginals ruled the area until the 1840s, when it became a part of the Port Phillip Protectorate. Menton became a tourist hub after the railway line linked it to Melbourne in 1881. Beach baths were built in 1884, and the founders of the Heidelberg School of painting set up an art camp in 1886. The area saw a real estate boom in the early 1900s and cemented its position as a key beachside suburb in Melbourne.
