Overview Moorabbin is a southeastern Melbourne suburb situated 15 km from the central business district. Bordering the locality are Bentleigh, Bentleigh East, Heatherton, Cheltenham, Highett, and Hampton East. South Road traces the northern section while Warrigal Road outlines the east. Meanwhile, Nepean Highway goes through the western portion and covers the neighbouring communities. The suburb is part of Kingston City.
Living in Moorabbin Moorabbin is a friendly community that is just a quick drive from the city. It is also minutes to the beach, hence an excellent option for beachgoers. Housing in the area is often characterised by detached brick houses in red and cream colour. Most of these styles were built from the 1940s to the 1970s, after World War II. There are also several modern homes, particularly townhouses and villa units. Local stores and restaurants are scattered around the expanse; the eastern part, however, is primarily allocated for industrial purposes. The industrial section has long been established since the 1960s.
History of Moorabbin It is said that Moorabbin derived from the Aboriginal term moorooboon, which means mother’s milk. The reason for this was the area once served as the location where the early women and children waited while the men were hunting. In 1846, brothers Richard and John King discovered the expanse, making them the first European to arrive in the suburb. Subsequently, the Post Office was established as South Brighton. It was later replaced with Brighton South in 1886 and then Moorabbin in 1909.
