History of Heatherton The area has been subjected to heavy sand mining as part of the Melbourne Sandbelt. However, many extraction sites have now been converted to new usage. Heatherton Post Office first opened its doors on May 6, 1885, and remained active until 1973. In 1994, it was listed as an agricultural district and residential neighbourhood, complete with a school, hall, church, and trotting track. In 1999, the school was closed.
