History of Mortdale Mortdale used to be known as various names in the past, such as Mort’s Road, Mort’s Hill, Mort’s Dale, Mort’s Crossing, and Mort’s Township. The suburb was named after a Sydney Industrialist, Thomas Sutcliffe Mort. A small farming community had started in the area by 1884 after the land was divided into seventeen farms. The earliest residencies in Mortdale were built in 1885. The suburb was officially named “Mortdale” when the local railway station was completed and opened on 20 March 1897.
