History of Penshurst The suburb was named after Penshurst, Kent, England, and it was initially part of the land grant to Robert Townson in 1763. Timber cutting and small farming was the main occupation until the developments like railway station and roads. A river ran through McRaes Reserve, but now the river’s path is replaced with an underground rainwater system. Today, the suburb is home to residential as well as commercial developments.
