History of Mount Gravatt Surveyor Robert Dixon named Mount Gravatt in 1840. He named it after Lieutenant George Gravatt, who was the commander of the Moreton Bay penal colony. He was relocated to India and died in 1843. In 1874, Mount Gravatt State School was opened, and in 1888, some land was advertised to be auctioned as 'The Abdington Estate Mount Gravatt'. The development in the area started between 1953 and 1969 when electric trams ran from Mount Gravatt into Brisbane's Central Business District along Logan Road.
