History of Mulgrave In 1839, Scottish builder Thomas Napier started a small settlement in Mulgrave. His homestead was located at present-day Jells Park. Soon it came to have several homesteads and grew as a rich farming area. Mulgrave became a district in 1857 and got a post office in 1869. It was included in the Shire of Oakleigh between 1871 and 1891 before being made a shire. Following many territorial changes, the suburb acquired its present shape in 1961.

Previously, the Monash Freeway was known as the Mulgrave Freeway after the suburb. Today, it is home to Jacksons Road, the omnipresent interchange that often finds mention in television and radio programmes.
