History of Murrumbateman In the 19th century, the European settlement began in the area. They started sheep farming, wheat growing, and gold mining as major economic activities. In 1869, the first government school in the town was established. In the 1970s, some of the rural properties around the area started to develop with boutique wineries and grape growing. Today, much of the land has been subdivided into small hobby farm blocks.
