History of Newstead Newstead was added as a locality in 1963. The suburb was named after the Newstead House. The Newstead House was built in the vicinity in 1855 by one Ronald Campbell Gunn. It was supposed to be given the name Kawallah, but this did not push through as it was unsupported by the area's locals. It officially became Newstead in 1961.
