History of St Leonards There is also very little known about the history of St. Leonards. What is known is that it was gazetted as a locality in 1963. In a digitized review of the history of St Leonards, it was stated that it used to be called Paterson’s Plains. The boundaries of the district were indefinite at the time.
It was named after Lieutenant-Governor Colonel William Paterson since his wife was given the large piece of land. Due to the ever-changing climate, the settlers were faced with many cattle deaths and had a hard time trying to harvest and plant. By 1806 there were only three settlers—James Hill, James Brumby and Surgeon Mountgarret. This was because of the famine that came to the larger area of Paterson’s Plains.
