History of North Sydney
When European settlers first settled it, this suburb was known as Hunterhill – named after Thomas Muir Hunterhill, a Scottish police former who owned a piece of land in the area. In 1846, the area had several houses and the commercial centre expanded in 1859. It was officially incorporated as a municipality in 1890, and the name North Sydney was finalised. The period of 1971-72 was when it had a significant transformation into a central commercial hub.
