Overview The suburb of Rockbank lies 29 kilometres west of Melbourne. Rockbank is under the local administration of the City of Melton. The small suburb is part of a volcanic plain dominated by Mount Cottrell at 116 m above sea level. According to the 2016 census, it has 1,536 residents. Other suburbs bordering Rockbank include Grangefields, Aintree, Thornhill Park, Mount Atkinson and Fieldstone.
Living in Rockbank The serene and quaint suburb is now home to several housing estates offering more affordable homes than Melton and places adjacent to Melbourne. It has well-developed shopping centres and educational institutions in proximity. There is a railways station midway between Melton and Melbourne.
Residents find it convenient to reach Melbourne through the Western Freeway that runs along its northern boundary. Rockbank is home to several wineries encouraged by its red volcanic soil apt for vineyards. The suburb hosts Victoria's Annual Olive Festival every November.
History of Rockbank The place was named Rockbank due to the presence of large rocks in the area. Volcanic eruptions thousand years ago formed the vast plain. However, Rockbank's rocky land makes it difficult for cultivation. When Europeans settled in the area, they used these rocks to create walls between paddocks to house animals. This rock-wall feature led people to call the place Rockbank.
It was a large suburb under the City of Melton until 2017 when Grangefields, Aintree and Thornhill Park were separated and made different suburbs.
