History of Rosehill Following the English settlement in Parramatta in 1788, Governor Arthur Phillip named the highland behind his house at Rosehill. In 1789, Henry Dodd set up a farm at Rose Hill. James Ruse began his farm next year and harvested good-quality wheat and corn. This led to the clearing of 200 acres for farming, and the entire area became Rosehill farms.
In 1883, John Macarthur's 850-acre Elizabeth Farm was separated into industrial zones and a recreation centre, which is now the Rosehill Racecourse. 1886 saw the setting up of a public school, and a railway station came up two years later. Today, Rosehill suburb combines residential, commercial, industrial and recreational areas within it.
