The British came to Parramatta in 1788, about ten months after establishing the first settlement in Sydney. Thus, the suburb is the oldest European inland settlement and the second-oldest in Australia.
Parramatta’s modern history began as home to a large farm that supplied food to the British settlements in Sydney. The large tract of flood plains was found suitable for growing grains while John Macarthur established a vast sheep farm to supply wool. The extensive grassland saw several battles as the Darugs attacked Europeans in Paramatta in 1797-98 before being decisively defeated and driven away.
