Overview Westmead is a well-known suburb in the Greater Western Sydney region. About 26 km northwest of Sydney, the locality is under the administration of the Cumberland Council. Westmead is nicknamed the health capital of Australia, as it is home to the largest concentration of hospitals in the country. The suburb was notified of a Planned Precinct in November 2017, and the 2016 census put the population figures at 16,309.

History of Westmead When the English settled in the Paramatta area, they began to call the meadows to the west Westmead. The name first appeared in official records in 1859, and the area was part of the governor's domain. Europeans gradually moved into the area and set up farms and orchards in Westmead. Many areas of the suburb still bear the names of the founders of those orchards, such as George Oakes and Nat Payten.
A school came up in the locality in 1820, making it the oldest Catholic school in Australia. Westmead and the nearby government farm at Toongabbie had to fend off several Darug raids during the heydays of the Frontier Wars.
