History of Northmead Northmead means the meadows to the north of Paramatta. The area was a hunting and meeting ground for the Aboriginal Burramattagal clan. It saw the arrival of the English Settlers in 1788, and the first settlement had only convicts and marines. They cleared the land, and this brought them into conflict with the Darug people.

In 1859, the area was split into two separate divisions – Northmead and Westmead. Soon land was granted to start the Model Farms, which is the present-day Westmead Showground. Many private farms and cottages came up in Westmead with the growth in economic activities. It received tram lines in 1902, and industrialisation started in 1911.
