Overview Baulkham Hills is a suburb situated 31 kilometres northwest of the Sydney central business district. It is located in the Hills District of Greater Western Sydney and has 37,050 residents (2016 census) -- the most populous suburb within the Hills Shire.
The surrounding suburbs of Baulkham Hills are Bella Vista, Norwest, Castle Hill, Kings Langley, West Pennant Hills, Winston Hills, Northmead, and North Rocks.
Locals refer to the suburb as “Baulko”.
Living in Baulkham Hills Baulkham Hills is predominantly a residential neighbourhood where most residents enjoy a casual and carefree lifestyle.
The main commercial area in the suburb is Grove Square, where significant supermarkets such as Coles, Aldi and Woolworths are located (plus 70 other speciality shops). Another shopping centre is located in the northern part of Baulkham Hills, where various businesses operate.
Baulkham Hills boasts several parks and reserves, including the Bidjigal Reserve, which is home to koalas, wallabies and eastern water dragons.
History of Baulkham Hills The area is believed to be initially inhabited by the Bidjigal people. During the British invasion, Bidjigal leader Pemulwuy was known to have led the resistance against the colonisers until he was captured and executed by the British forces.
The first settler in the area was William Joyce, who was given a grant of 30 acres. Many of the land grants in the area were subdivided into farms. It was when the Rogans Hills railway line was established when the suburb saw rapid development.
Baulkham Hills was named by settler Andrew McDougall who was initially from Buckholm Hills in Scotland.
