History of Merrylands Lawyer and politician Arthur Holroyd bought land tracts in the area in 1855. While the nearby suburb of Holroyd was named after him in 1926, Merrylands got its name from his English hometown. It was the 320-acre Sherwood Scrubs estate site, where Holroyd stayed, built a house, and began a drain pipe and tile manufacturing unit before his death there in 1887.
