History of Dundas Dundas is named after Henry Dundas (1742-1811), an influential Scottish politician, leader of the Scottish Enlightenment and a former British home secretary and defence minister. Because of its location close to The Ponds Creek, the area was initially known as "The Ponds." The north-western part of the locality was granted to settlers in 1791 following the growth of the British settlement around Sydney. This resulted in 14 former convicts settling in the area around Ponds and Subiaco creeks with their families.

When Reverend Samuel Marsden bought 100 acres of land, he set up a farm named "Dundas Farm." The area got a post office in 1867 and was called Pennant Hills. It became Dundas only in 1890. Charles Darwin, who is well-known for his theory of evolution, visited the area in 1836.
