Overview Rushcutters Bay is a suburb of Sydney, situated three kilometres east of the city’s central business district. It is located within the LGA of the City of Sydney and is surrounded by Potts Point, Elizabeth Bay, Darling Point, Darlinghurst, Paddington, and Edgecliff. Port Jackson is located on the northeast side of the suburb.
Based on the 2016 census, Rushcutters Bay is home to 2,547 residents.
Living in Rushcutters Bay At the heart of Rushcutters Bay are expansive parklands that offer beautiful views of the bay - another focal point in the suburb. History of Rushcutters Bay In the early years of the British settlement, the suburb was called “Rush Cutting Bay”, as the area was swampy and covered with tall rushes used by the settlers for thatching houses. After reclamation work was completed in 1878, Rushcutters bay Park was created.
Rushcutters Bay plays a key role in the country’s sporting history as it was once the site of the famed Sydney Stadium. On Boxing Day of 1908, the legendary boxer Jack Johnson won the heavyweight title over Tommy Burns.
The suburb was also home to White City Stadium, where major tennis tournaments were held.
