In 1801, John Hillas arrived in Australia and was given two land grants. He named one of these lands Stanhope Farm. In 1856, the Pearce family bought the Stanhope Farm, and in 1928, the family sold it to Jack Peel. Jack Peel renamed the farm Stanhope Park Dairy.
Stanhope Gardens was first called Irish Town, then Kellyville and Parklea. The people of the suburb voted to keep the suburb's name Stanhope and eventually Stanhope Gardens.
